Basic idea how I make my coats

Post by Shinymane1 on Sat Apr 11, 2009 5:15 pm

Ok first I get a base - obviously lol

Then I search on DeviantArt or google for a horse in a similar pose, like this for example

Then I use this tool, it's called the eyedropper tool

And start putting the colours on from the photo like that. If you don't know how to use the eyedropper tool, just open your photo in a different tab, click on the part of the horse you want the colour from, and it automatically selects that exact colour, then paint it on your base!

Now just smudge it all together on strength 26% Very Happy

Shiny, I think you've mastered the art of borrowing colors from a photo. While copying is an important step in learning to be an independent artist, I think you are ready move on to the next step- use the same technique but color without a reference image. Or, you could experiment with hair textures more. Do a furry winter coat, or a dripping wet horse. I hope you take this as a compliment, but ever since you figured out how to do this style, your horses have looked the same. Speaking as a voter in the COTM contest, if anyone else pulled this off I'd be impressed, but you need to show me something different to impress me.
