few tips
-add detail around the eye, eg the brow and shadowing
-add same detail to back legs and half as you have on the front.

And kat, like I said. Don't give up to quickly, your coats are getting better and there are others on the site willing to help you with your coats.
I would suggest layers would help you a lot...(There are layers on GIMP right?)
