I have tried mainly fantasy colors... like a purple, for the horse, which I am not too good at. I think I'm going to try a different color that is more real.

oh no ember! i'm sorry!!
ok if you work with layers what i did is start by doing the armor-i used like 7 or 8 different layers to get the highlights and everything just right-when i was sure i was done with the armor i merged them so i wouldn't have so many layers floating around! then you start a layer underneat the armor that way you don't accidently color over it (found that out the hard way) and then color your horse a color-then start with shadows (a new layer inbetween horse color and armor) to give it the 3-D look then start the horse muscles and stuff itself you'll get it! choose a purple that you like-then take it 2-3 shades both directions, 2 or 3 shades darker then lighter and put them above your horse-and use those colors!! good luck!! if you need more help (should i say confusion hehe) let me know

It shouldn't be any harder to do a purple horse than any normal color. You know where you want shadow and highlight, its just a matter of picking the colors. When I do my coats, I pick the base, but then I go all over the place for my accents. You don't just have to go straight lighter or darker- in a brown horse the shadows can be blue or purple, the highlights can be more copper or orange... the more colors you blend together, the more 3D it starts to look. The white horse I did for he last competition probably had 15-20 different shades of gray, blue, purple and pink.

a_horseaholic- I do know that. But normally with GIMP I find it easiest to use the Dodge/burn tool, doing it many times for many shades. I have done lots of different colors on my coats- like a blue one I have. Or my favorite fire colored horse. I lost it anyway when GIMP closed on me.
